The obvious solution for reducing costs is single payer.
Since that is politically impossible, competitive bidding seems a more
reasonable way to reduce costs (which needs to be done) than outright denial of
service. That should be done for prescription drugs too, instead of forbidding
competition as an act of obeisance to Pharma. If delivery is inefficient, then
streamline delivery rather than eliminate competitive bidding. It doesn't
really make sense to insist that Eleanor Roosevelt is the Dowager Queen of the
No-Competition Rigged-Bid Sweetheart-Contract Party.

Why are these benefits limited to the "young at heart"? This is ageism. It is just those who are old at heart who need walls to call our clearest and queerest when we fall in the shower. Quite apart from the cardiological aspect -- if I were young at heart would I have needed three stents and a bypass? -- there is the mental health angle. Someone of my age would have to be delusional not to be old at heart. That doesn't mean we old folks cannot enjoy life -- toujours gai, Archie, as Mehitabel the Cat so wisely said -- but aging in place is not for the young in any organ.

Very interesting essay. Ross Thomas sounds like an author worth trying. Your readers may wish to know that they can find almost any book they can think of at www.bookfinder.com. I checked The Procane Chronicle and the first entry (of several) offered 118 copies, beginning at $4.99 including postage.

I have to protest the characterization of Jacqueline Bisset as the most beautiful actress of all time. That is an insult to the memory of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, and to Kim Novak who is still alive. For shame!

What evidence do you have that Herzl was DIVINELY inspired, rather than just inspired? Are you not adding one more term than you need? Bill Ockham mentioned this to me the other day at the Yale Club and I said I'd bring it up with you.
